About Us

The Horse And Farrier will reopen its doors at 12pm on Saturday 4th July.

New Procedures to keep you and the staff safe have been introduced and will be available on the web site later this week.

As of Monday 29th our takeaway menu will go on hold to give the head chef Jose and his team time to train his team and get ready for our relaunch including new menus.

A Little History...

The Horse and Farrier lies hard up beneath the towering ridges of Blencathra in the village of Threlkeld Cumbria. For many years travelers passing by on the Keswick to Threlkeld road would stop at a farm to water their horses and buy food from the farmer. Eventually the Farmer decided that there was more profit in Hospitality than farming so the farm became the Horse & Farrier.

It has remained a coaching inn ever since offering good beer, good food, warm beds and most important of all a warm welcome to everyone be they travelers arriving by car, walkers descending the mountain, or locals popping in for a quiet pint and a crack. We have tried to retain its charm and old world feel to do justice to the 1688 over the front door but at the same time turning it into a modern Coaching Inn fit for the 21st century.

Things have changed since 1688 - not only the recent refurbishment and probably many undertaken by our predecessors - but also the range and quality of the food. We pride ourselves wherever possible in using locally sourced ingredients and we are striving to be greener in our approach to our business. We actively support the local community and try to recruit from the local area indeed most of our regular staff live in and around the village.

Talking of predecessors you will see some cartoons around the bar and restaurant area of a previous owner drawn by the famous local artist Wikes they show that little has changed with the look of the outside of the building as portrayed in his work!

We still welcome the local hunt but the Owner is a bit taller and definitely slimmer!
